Eins der vollständigsten unter den erhaltenen Bildprogrammen des Mittelalters, zugleich abstrakt und voller rührender Details. Die mit gewissermaßen dem Urknall beginnende Schöpfungsgeschichte ist vielleicht nirgendwo präsiser erfasst worden. Genial auch das Mosaik des Alypiusportals, in dem man die Überführung der Gebeine des Heiligen Markus in genau das Gebäude dargestellt hat, vor dem der Betrachter steht. Ein wunderbares Archiv der Entwicklung der europäischen Kunst zwischen 1100 und 1290, worin die romanische Bildauffassung zunehmend durch anschauliche Hintergründe ergänzt wird und sich im “Traum des Moses” schon eine ganze Landschaft unter einem romantisch liegenden Sichelmond präsentiert. Darüber hinaus erkennt man in den Rundkompositionen der Kuppeln (mit zum Teil bereits gerahmten Bildfeldern) nicht nur eine Frühform des Kinos, die an die Bewegungsexperimente von Marey und Muybridge denken lässt, sondern auch den Prototypen unserer heutigen DVDs, eine runde Scheibe mit Bildspeicherung in Mosaik-Pixeln. - K.
